Book recs, an emerging candle crisis, some sneezing, and a bit more
(I should really use AI to help me create subject lines)
Hello friends,
I do love the weather this time of year. Without a doubt, my favorite times of year in Atlanta are Spring and Fall…but let’s be real: these allergies are for the birds.
Ok, I’ve stopped sneezing. Let’s do this…
Book 5 is getting close to launch…
Teresa Caro, Megan Barney, and I have been hard at work on our book, The Purpose Playbook. It’s slated to be out in September, and I hope to be able to share the cover soon.
My first four books, for those keeping track (hey, Mom!), focused on: leading like an entrepreneur (book 1), leading during a crisis (book 2), building a great team (book 3), and building an undeniable culture (book 4). This next book in the series will help leaders and teams find their Purpose and execute against it. It will be one part story and one part workbook.
Purpose Group got a little bigger in March
Guys…I get to work with my boy again 💪🎉🥳
Raj Choudhury and I were roommates at UNC-Charlotte in 1996 and started our first business together (Spunlogic) in 1998. We worked together for 15 years — building and selling Spunlogic, then building and selling Engauge — and we spent the last ten years remaining close but doing our own things. Now, Alloy has joined Purpose Group, and Raj and I are getting to work together again. Our back story is pretty funny.
Here’s a silly photo of Raj and me in 1996:
Purpose-driven…consulting?
I’ll remind you once again that at Purpose Group we offer purpose-driven consulting. So let me know if you or someone you know needs some of that goodness :)
What you might want to read
I’m going to keep beating the Unreasonable Hospitality (by Will Guidara) drum. Aside from that, here are some recs:
Fiction: If It Bleeds (Stephen King)
Nonfiction: I’m Glad My Mom Died (Jennette McCurdy)
Ripples Media book: What Does Your Fortune Cookie Say? (Adam Albrecht)
Also, I have to say that I LOVE reading on the Kindle Scribe. I also love taking notes on it, which is why I originally got it, but reading a book on it is fantastic.
And here’s something I never thought I’d ask…
…got any good candle recommendations?
As I’ve transitioned to almost entirely working from home, I’ve worked hard to hack my way to productivity. If you know me, you know I’m kinda obsessed with productivity. (Proof.)
And let’s be honest, working from home, while it has its benefits, is tough! I don’t know how it happened, but over the last year, I’ve been lighting up a candle when I sit down at my desk to get some real work done. Never, ever in my life have I had a candle. Sure, I’ve seen them magically pop up in my house around the holidays (presumably by some Christmas elf.) And I always enjoy that, but never did I think, “I need to get into this candle-owning business.”
But boy, does it help. I’m not sure if this is a real hack, or if it’s just something that helps me, or if I’m in the middle of some placebo effect, but when I light up a candle in my office, I get 💩 done.
So I find myself in the position of buying candles, but I have no idea what I’m doing! Some things I’d love to know:
What candles are the least bad for me? I’ve read and heard things (sometimes from my wife) that candles can be bad for you, which makes sense, but I need my fix!
What’s a reasonable price to pay for a decent candle? I have literally no idea. Are we talking $5? $50? Do I need a candle subscription or membership to some club? Ack!
What are some good scents? I don’t like fragrances (that’s a word I never thought I’d write) that are too strong, but also, I do like a little smell going on :)
Let me know what to do about this!!
The Point
Honestly, it always boils down to hoping that you’re happy. If there is anything I can do to help you find happiness, please let me know.
